Volga-Dnepr Airlines and DATADVANCE successfully completed the pilot project on multi-objective airfoil optimization.

Volga-Dnepr experts highly appreciate the results of the pilot project applying DATADVANCE's innovation technology for engineering optimization.

The project task solved using the pSeven software package was to perform multi-objective optimization of an airfoil of a heavy transport aircraft as a part of the fuselage. The primary goal was to secure the required lift value achieving maximum efficiency. Three-dimensional aerodynamic simulations require significant computational resources and take a lot of time, therefore the task was solved using the SmartSelection technology and the Surrogate Based Optimization algorithm implemented in pSeven. These techniques allowed to solve the optimization problem using only 67 iterations and to find the configuration that increases the lift value by 8%.

The project also included a task of two-objective optimization that aimed to increase the lift and minimize the wing mass. Thanks to the support for reusing previous calculations history implemented in pSeven, the Pareto frontier estimate for this problem was generated using only 110 model evaluations.

«After the review and analysis of obtained solutions we conclude that pSeven shows good results in fine-tuning airfoils. The solutions prove pSeven's applicability to solving a number of specific aerodynamic problems.» - said Mikhail Rozhkov, the Chief Engineer of Volga-Dnepr Airlines.

«We are glad that more and more opportunities appear which allow us to apply the experience gained while working with such companies as Airbus and Airbus Helicopters to new partnership projects with Russian aircraft design companies.» - said Sergey Morozov, CEO at DATADVANCE.

Volga-Dnepr Airlines is the global leader in the special market of oversize and super-heavy cargo transportation. Every year, they carry more than 60 000 tons of cargo to more than 80 countries of the world. The annual cargo turnover is more than 350 000 thousands of tonne-kilometers.

Volga-Dnepr Airlines provides the whole package of logistics services for air charter movements of complex, special and oversize cargo. The airline operates a unique fleet of ramp aircraft comprising of 12 Antonov-124-100 ‘Ruslan’ and five Ilyushin-76 freighter aircraft.
